Catering Checklist

According to the Georgia State Department of Health, a caterer is any operation in which foods are prepared in bulk quantity for delivery and service off the premises by the owner of the operation and not packaged and labeled for resale. Boxed lunches are not considered catered food. Caterers cannot sell to a company which in turn would resell the product.

The following information is suggested criteria when choosing a caterer for an event on campus:

  • Be sure the caterer has evidence of insurance in accordance to the limits included in the contract
  • Be sure at least one person from the caterer has completed their ServSafe Certification
  • Be sure to obtain a copy of their State of Georgia Food Service Permit
  • Be sure to obtain a copy of their three most recent public health scores; ensure all have a score of “B” or above
  • Be sure they have knowledge of and accept terms of UGA policy regarding food service and outside catering
  • If possible, visit caterer headquarters to review operations
  • Be sure to include clean-up and trash disposal in contracts with caterers
