The Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety group is available to provide assessments of indoor air quality (IAQ) and environmental conditions within individual offices and buildings on campus.
IAQ recommendations are based on industry best practices and guidance from the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
If you have an IAQ concern in a campus facility, consider taking the following actions:
1. If you believe there is an immediate life-safety threat, exit the area and call 911.
2. If there is not an immediate life-safety threat, discuss your IAQ concern with your building or facility management.
3. Follow the link below to request an indoor air quality assessment.
4. An IHOS program administrator will evaluate your concern within three business days and determine the appropriate investigative steps, which may include:
- A follow up appointment with the requesting employee
- Discussion with your building or facility management
- Review of the history of other IAQ-related concerns within your facility (if applicable)
- Consultation with the Facilities Management Division or third-party contractors as needed
- A plan to appropriately evaluate and measure the IAQ concern
5. If the assessment concludes that improvements are needed, IHOS will complete a written report and work with building/unit management, the Facilities Management Division, and/or third-party contractors as needed for any recommended improvements.
6. If the assessment reveals chemical exposure to be above industry standards, IHOS will work with building and unit management to identify follow-up actions and implementation as needed.
Feel free to contact the IHOS team at ihos@uga.edu with any questions.
