Indoor Air Quality

The Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety group is available to provide assessments of indoor air quality (IAQ) and environmental conditions within individual offices and buildings on campus.

IAQ recommendations are based on industry best practices and guidance from the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Follow these steps to report an IAQ concern:

  1. If an occupant perceives an immediate threat to life safety, they should evacuate the area immediately and call 911.
  2. For non-emergencies, occupants should:
    1. Discuss the concern with facility/unit leadership;
    2. Report the concern through the IHOS website (esd.uga.edu); or
    3. Submit a work request to FMD.
  3. IHOS staff will assess the concern and determine appropriate next steps, which could include:
    1. Meeting with the person who raised the concern
    2. Consulting building/facility management
    3. Reviewing past IAQ issues in the facility
    4. Coordinating with FMD or third-party contractors
    5. Developing a plan to evaluate the IAQ issue
  4. If the assessment concludes that corrective action is needed, IHOS will collaborate with facility/unit leadership, FMD, and/or contractors to help ensure facilities are suitable for occupation.

Feel free to contact the IHOS team at ihos@uga.edu with any questions.
